Elport built a flexible, DMX-controlled LED lighting system into BBC Sport's Gold Coast Commonwealth Games studio, keeping every day's breakfast broadcast fresh across the event.
For the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia, BBC Sport needed a studio set robust enough to anchor its coverage for the full duration of the event, while staying flexible enough for daily production changes.
Elport designed a set that could support multiple camera positions and be reconfigured between shows without a full rebuild. The same set doubled as BBC's main breakfast presentation base throughout the Games, so it had to look and perform consistently, show after show, across the tournament's run.
At the heart of the design was Elport's own DMX Flex flexible LED strip lighting system, designed and manufactured in-house and integrated directly into the set construction. The system gave producers full control over colour and brightness across every lit element at the touch of a button, allowing the studio's look to be adjusted instantly for different segments, camera angles and times of day.
The result was a broadcast set that gave BBC Sport the visual flexibility to cover a major, fast-moving international sporting event from a single, dependable studio base, with lighting that could be reshaped on demand rather than rebuilt.
