A flexible DMX LED lighting system let BBC Sport reconfigure camera angles and mood at the touch of a button throughout its 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics coverage.
BBC Sport needed a studio set capable of carrying its coverage of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games — a production that ran for the duration of the event and had to support multiple camera positions and frequent set changes as the schedule moved between sports, analysis and live updates. The same set also doubled as BBC's main breakfast presentation set throughout the event period, so it needed to work as hard for a two-minute headline read as it did for a full afternoon of Olympic coverage.
Elport designed and manufactured the lighting system at the heart of the set: a DMX Flex flexible LED strip installation built directly into the set construction. Rather than relying on fixed rigs and manual resets between segments, the system gives production teams full control over colour and brightness levels across every lit element, adjustable at the touch of a button.
That flexibility mattered as much for a breaking news update as for prime-time Olympic build-up — the set could shift mood and tone instantly without a single physical change, keeping BBC Sport's coverage visually consistent and camera-ready throughout one of the busiest events in the broadcast calendar.
